As a gasoline additive, DMC can improve the octane number and oxygen content, and then improve the knock resistance. DMC has the properties of high oxygen content (molecular oxygen content up to 53%), excellent octane increase (octane number up to 105), no phase separation, low toxicity and rapid biodegradability, so that when gasoline reaches the same oxygen content, the amount of DMC used is 4.5 times less than methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Thus, the total emission of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde in automobile exhaust is reduced. In addition, the shortcomings of common gasoline additives that are easily soluble in water and pollute underground water are overcome. Therefore, DMC will become one of the most potential gasoline additives to replace MTBE.
