The following by Runze to take you into the understanding of dichloromethane
Methylene chloride, molecular formula CH2Cl2, molecular weight 84.93. Colorless transparent liquid having a pungent odor similar to ether. Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether. Is a non-flammable low boiling point solvent, commonly used in place of flammable petroleum ether, ether, etc.
Methylene CHLORIDE HAS the advantages of strong solubility and low toxicity. It is widely used in the manufacture of safety film and polycarbonate, and the rest are used as coating solvent, metal degreasing agent, gas spray agent, polyurethane foaming agent, release agent and paint stripping agent.
Dichloromethane is colorless liquid, in the pharmaceutical industry as reaction medium, used for the preparation of ampicillin, hydroxybenzillin and vanguard mycin; Also used as solvent in film production, petroleum dewaxing solvent, aerosol propellant, organic synthesis extraction agent, polyurethane foam production foaming agent and metal cleaning agent.
Dichloromethane is mainly used in film production and medicine in China. Among them, the consumption for film production accounts for 50 percent of the total consumption, the pharmaceutical industry accounts for 20 percent of the total consumption, the detergent and chemical industry accounts for 20 percent of the total consumption, and other aspects account for 10 percent. Dichloromethane is also used as a secondary refrigerant in industrial refrigeration systems, but it is very harmful and can produce highly toxic phosgene when in contact with open flames or hot objects. When exposed to moist air, it can hydrolyze to produce trace hydrogen chloride. Light can also promote the hydrolysis and enhance the corrosion of metal.
Used for grain fumigation and refrigeration of low pressure refrigerators and air conditioning units. It is used as an auxiliary foaming agent in the production of polyether urane foams and as a foaming agent for extruding polysulfone foams.
Methylene chloride is also used to make decaffeinated coffee. The coffee is boiled to dissolve the caffeine and float on the surface, and then methylene chloride is used to remove the caffeine.
